 Free-Stitched Embroidery on Wool

Create a densely hand embroidered vignette on wool. Boiled wool is easy on the hands and welcomes hand stitchery with colorful pearl cotton threads. You’ll learn a swift way to transfer an original design to the wool. Then learn how to use simple embroidery stitches to create lines and pattern along with various stitch combinations to make even more texture.

A kit of hand-dyed threads, needles, and a solid colored wool fabric is provided. You’ll also receive a 45 page handbook of embroidery stitches and stitch combinations to inspire even more ideas. Another Nut House
Recreate an image of your home, The Nut House. Learn fusing techniques like pattern transfer, bias weaving, and making it up as you go along. Learn how to add hand embroidery and bind your small art quilt too. Pattern templates are provided, but you will provide the fun and imagination. Bring your Nut House to life with a kit of beautifully hand-dyed fabrics and threads.

When you design quilts as you go, you embrace serendipity and become an “accidental artist”. Learn several methods of creating fused quilt designs in an improvisational manner. Begin with a heap of pre-fused fabric scraps from Laura’s stash to trigger your design ideas. Learn various systems for constructing your artwork and put your colorful fabric kit to good use. You’ll create and learn as you go. It’s fun to design on the fly!

Free Stitched Embroidery Landscapesembroiderylandscape1a
Densely hand stitched, these small landscape vignettes are created from your original design. They are made with cotton threads and free stitched on hand-dyed silk fabric. The vignettes are rich in color and texture and marks by the maker. You’ll learn about fabric and batting choices, how to transfer your design to the silk, the threads and needles best for stitching, and how to devise embroidery stitch combinations unique to your design. It is a slow, thoughtful, tempo of making intimate art work.

Explore the mesmerizing world of Zen Doodling and design an original art quilt at the same time. You’ll soon discover how easy it is to doodle like a Zen master and learn how to convert that drawing into a pattern for your quilt. Garden of Eden

In this tempting class create a small art quilt teeming with every flower in creation. Build a blooming garden on a green base of lush leaves, curly ferns and wavy blades of grass. Add simple daisies, jolly tulips, and colorful chrysanthemums to the mix and you have a garden that Eve would envy. All from colorful fused fabrics. Directions for free cutting flowers, bias leaves and fused quilt assembly processes are covered. (No sewing machine needed.)

Tiny Homes

Create a little house quilt and receive a degree in Architecture from the Chicago School of Fusing at the same time! In this workshop we explore the many techniques of fusing: free cutting, layering, collage building, improvisational design, and more. The result is a whimsical neighborhood placed in a colorful landscape setting and made from beautifully hand-dyed fabrics. (No sewing machine is needed.)

Couching Thread, Hidden Needle
(A 2 – 4 day workshop)

A well placed embroidery stitch brings a quilt to life. It lends the quilt surface color, pattern, definition, and texture.

You’ll create several small art quilts while learning an improvisational method of construction with fused fabrics. These fused quilts act as your canvas for hand stitchery and take your work from flat to fabulous!

With the emphasis on basic embroidery stitches like running, seed, French knots, and lazy daisy, students will also learn more complex hand stitches, stitch combinations, and stitch variations. Learn about embroidery stitch choices, placement, and inventing new stitch ideas.

Create new work with the ease of fusing and entice the viewer closer to your art with free form, unfettered embroidery. (No sewing machine needed!)

Translating Ideas into Fabric
(a 3 – 4 day workshop)

Like a journal or photo album, quilts illustrate the stories of our lives. Capture the essence of your story and transform it into an original fused art quilt.

Using your own sketch, photo, or even vague idea, you’ll make a custom pattern for your design using a digital camera, computer, and projector provided by Laura. You’ll learn fusing basics, how to create improvisational quilts, and a quick pattern transfer method that lets you freely translate your ideas into fabric.

It’s easy to create original designs and to tell your own story in cloth.

Fusing Fun: Fast, Fearless Art Quilts
(This is a 4 – 5 Day Workshop or a 2-Day Workshop)

Toss the templates and trash the rulers! Fusing is free-form art making at its best. Working with fusible web on fabric, discover fusing techniques like free cutting, strip fusing, collage building, bias fusing, and improvisational assemblage. Fusing is fast and free so you quickly invent your own design language to explore. You’ll create several original art quilts and learn to get loose, really loose. As an added bonus, learn tunes from the Chicago School of Fusing Glee Club and graduate with an advanced degree in Fusology! (Sewing machine is optional.)
