 Improvisational Hand Embroidery on Wool

Create a densely hand embroidered vignette on wool. Felted wool is easy on the hands and welcomes hand stitchery with colorful pearl cotton threads. You’ll learn a swift way to transfer an original design to the wool. Then learn how to use simple embroidery stitches to create lines and pattern along with various stitch combinations to make even more texture.

Another Nut House
Recreate an image of your home, The Nut House. Learn fusing techniques like pattern transfer, bias weaving, and making it up as you go along. Learn how to add hand embroidery and bind your small art quilt too. Pattern templates are provided, but you will provide the fun and imagination. Bring your Nut House to life with a kit of beautifully hand-dyed fabrics and threads.

Your colorful quilt begins with a small sketch or doodle made in class. Using that sketch, you’ll create a pattern for your design. After learning an easy pattern transfer process for fused fabric, you’ll be free to use your pattern to invent your own original fused art quilt. Improvisation is encouraged and new fusing tips and tricks are presented to enhance your Zen doodle design. Create a little house quilt and receive a degree in Architecture from the Chicago School of Fusing at the same time! In this workshop we explore the many techniques of fusing: free cutting, layering, collage building, improvisational design, and more. (A 2 – 4 day workshop)

This class is about discovery. Laura will guide you in the creation of several small art quilts using fused fabrics and improvisational methods of construction. Your original designs then act as your canvas for improvisational hand embroidery.

You’ll learn basic fusing skills and techniques for quilt construction and how to easily invent new designs through improvisation. You’ll learn how to hand embroider a fused art quilt and find how a well-placed stitch brings your quilt to life.
