Caring for Finished Art Quilts at Home

Yellow chair art quilt detail

Small art quilts deserve the same respect as large show pieces. How you store and display them determines whether threads stay bright and fusible layers stay flat.

Hang lightweight pieces on a sleeve stitched to the back upper edge. Use a slim rod or a fabric-covered strip so the quilt hangs without pins through the face. Keep quilts out of direct sun, which fades hand-dyed thread over time.

For storage, roll quilts around a acid-free tube rather than folding them. If you must fold, pad the crease with acid-free tissue and refold differently every few months.

Cleaning gently

Most Artfabrik wall quilts need only a soft brush or a pass with the vacuum hose covered with cheesecloth. Avoid washing fused art quilts unless the fabrics were pre-washed and you tested thread colorfastness.

More display ideas appear on the quilt care and display portfolio page. When you ship work to a show, read how to pack softly for padding tips.
