Embroidered Bird #2 by Laura Wasilowski

In 13 steps I’ll show you how to make a free-stitched bird like this on wool. You’ll learn what embroidery threads and stitches it takes to bring your colorful fowl to life. Woolly Bird is a fun handwork project using felted wool, pearl cotton threads, and hand embroidery needles. There is no paper pattern. We are winging it!

To get started you’ll need these items:

  • A 7″ or 8″ square of felted wool. Felted wool is thicker than your standard wool skirt fabric and has more body. Have a wool coat in your closet? Go ahead, wash it in hot water agitating it in the washer. Throw it in the dryer and then clip out a square of fabric for your bird.
  • Embroidery thread (Size 8 pearl cotton threads work best)
  • Size 3 or 4 embroidery needles for the thread

  • Stitch an outline of a bird shape on the wool using a Running Stitch. Think of a bird shape as a quarter moon shape with one tip of the moon rounded for the head and the other tip squared off for the tail.
  • Use a Size 8 pearl cotton thread color that contrasts with the background fabric and in a color you won’t be using to outline the bird.
  • Stitch with a size 3 or 4 embroidery needle.
  • Make the bird about 5″ long. Adding a wing shape inside the bird.
  • If you don’t like the shape you’ve stitched, rip out the stitches and start again.
